What are Koshas? How it has been defined in yogic wisdom.

Definitions of koshas

In our ancient Vedas Koshas are referred to as dimensions of the human body. Discovering each dimension brings more closer to the vicinity of supreme consciousness — closer to the “oneness” with your self “I”; self real “I”.

Another way of defining koshas — koshas are five layers of consciousness. Transcending each layer successfully is landing in close vicinity of your higher self.

What is a dimension?

  • Dimension is not a physical entity or a tangible state to be governed by Newtonian Physics rather it is governed by Quantum Physics.
  • Dimension is a level of consciousness. Each level vibrating at a higher frequency than the lower ones.
  • In each dimension observer witness a clearer, transparent level of clarity, oneness, harmony, peace, and tranquility. — That means the level of wisdom increases as we move from lower dimension to higher dimension.
  • In every higher dimension, we witness greater power, unravel our own wisdom, and infinite potential within us.
  • As we move to a higher dimension the observer becomes observed. This I dare to borrow from my guru.
  • In our ancient Vedas dimension is referred to as Koshas.

As per our Vedas, we have Five Koshas :

  • Anandmaya kosha is the ultimate bliss sheath.

It is considered to be the fifth dimension.

  • Gyaanmaya kosha.

It is considered to be the fourth dimension.

  • Manomaya kosha.

It is considered to be the third dimension.

  • Praanmaya kosha.

It is considered to be the second dimension.

  • Annamaya kosha is the physical body.

It is considered to be the first dimension.

What is consciousness?

  • The ultimate frontier of human existence.
  • Consciousness is your private possession.
  • The inner mental movie which we observe as an observer.

Consciousness is an experience of thought, sound, feeling, smell. A meaning full pattern is a consciousness.

We’re nothing but the flow of energy. The very characteristics, the way we are, whatever situation we are in is a flow of energy.

Who is controlling the flow of energy?

The consciousness

Every incident is programmed in our consciousness. Whatever we’re doing the consciousness is grabbing and catching. Based on our sanchit karmas accordingly, there is a flow of energy.

Who controls our reflex actions, our emotions, our concentration, our body actions?

The fourth body or the fourth layer of the body, it is the Gyanmaya Kosha.

The Gyanmaya Kosha has all the files contract with the consciousness; it has all the belief system stored; in Vedic language, it is the sanchit karma, the Sanskaras.

The sanchit karmas control the thought which comes into our mind, it controls the concentration, it controls our reflex actions. It creates reactions towards every incident which happens in our life.

Unless the karmic layers are not released; the contract is not canceled; the thought cannot be changed. It won’t change through discourse.

As our kundalini rises with the rise in consciousness from root chakra to sahastratha chakra. Female energy from the root chakra emerges and helps the consciousness to rise from each chakra to be finally merged with male energy in sahastratha chakra.

This is in analogy to Shree Yantra, a pyramidal structure where energy rises from the base and rises in a pyramid shape to merge at the top of the Shree Yantra.

Affects of five elements over five koshas or five dimensions

  • Ananadmaya kosha has only akaash element. Air element fully dissolved meaning Anahata chakra fully blossomed. Complete enlightenment.
  • Gyaanmaya kosha has akaash and air element. The fire element is dissolved meaning Manipura chakra fully blossomed.
  • Manomaya kosha has akaash, air, fire element. The water element is dissolved meaning Swadishthan chakra fully activated and blossomed.
  • Praanmaya kosha has akaash, air, fire and water element. The earth element is dissolved meaning root chakra is fully activated and embodied.
  • Annamaya kosha the physical body has all five elements active.

Conclusion

So, as we go on practicing meditation, yoga, pranayama and follow the path to increase our consciousness; we’re able to break the boundaries of the layers or dimensions of each of our bodies and be on the successful path in dissolving each element(s) from one body to another, and finally in the end only one body remaining — Anandmaya kosha the bliss sheath with one element sky element.

Complete enlightenment. Self Realization — The Real I.

The journey from finite to infinite.

I salute you and salute the very divine within you.
